Laser Hair Removal - it's time to say goodbye to unwanted hair!

Hi, I’m Fliss, Laser Specialist at Elite Skin Studio! Laser Hair Removal is one of our most popular treatments due to how quick and effective results are! Firstly, here a few key things to know about laser hair removal

·       It is a treatment for the long term reduction of unwanted hair

·       The laser we use is suitable for all skin types, on any areas of the face or body

·       We provide quick and comfortable sessions, with little to no downtime

·       Laser will only work on brown or dark hair

·       For white, blonde or grey hair, see our information on electrolysis

How to get started with laser hair removal?

Step 1 – Book a consultation

Consultations are free of charge and include a patch test to ensure you’re suitable for treatment. Consultations typically take 20 minutes.

Step 2 – Your consultation

Come to your consultation with growth. This enables us to assess if your hair is suitable for treatment. We will go through a thorough medical questionnaire to make sure it is safe for you to have treatment. We will patch test you, which means we will use the laser a few times to ensure your hair is responding well and will get you great results. If we feel this is the case, we will book you in for your first treatment!

Step 3 – Your first treatment

You will have your first treatment approximately 1 week after your consultation to ensure there is no adverse reaction. You will come with your hair shaved or trimmed. Treatment times vary from 10 minutes for a small area, e.g. chin, upper lip to about 30 minutes for full leg treatment, or an hour for full body treatment.

Step 4 – Aftercare

You may feel a little warm in the area we have treated for a couple of hours, we always apply aloe vera to help soothe the skin post-treatment. You will be able to resume your daily activities straight away.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser is a strong type of energy that we apply to unwanted hair in the form of a light ‘zap’. This will target and destroy the hair cells responsible for hair growth without damaging the surrounding skin. The result is smooth, hair-free skin that lasts!

What Makes Laser Hair Removal Different To IPL?

Both laser and IPL work on the same principle – light is absorbed by areas of high pigment, the main difference between the two is the technology used to generate the light. Laser technology offers a more precise treatment which can be used to treat larger areas of the body. Each pulse of light emitted from the laser can treat several hairs at once, making this a much more efficient form of treatment.
Laser is also suitable for treating a wider range of skin tones, varying from very pale to very dark skin – by using the correct wavelength setting, the laser penetrates the hair follicle without damaging the surrounding skin. IPL however, is not recommended for darker skin types due to the risk of burning.

How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?

Depending on the areas you would like treated, and if you have any hormonal considerations, such as PCOS, you will need between 6-10 sessions for best results. If you do have hormonal conditions, you may need to have more frequent maintenance treatments after your course to keep on top of your results

Is My Skin Type Suitable For Laser Hair Removal?

Unlike IPL, the Elite+™ laser can be used on all skin types, with different settings available to suit different skin types. The Elite+™ by CynoSure benefits from having two lasers in one machine – the gold standard Alexandrite laser for hair removal on skin types 1-3 (lighter skin types), and the gold standard Nd:YAG Laser for hair removal on skin types 4+ (darker skin types) and also thread vein removal.

How Many Treatments Will Be Needed and How Far Apart Will They Be?

The treatment course will depend on which area is to be treated, this will be discussed during the consultation procedure. Generally speaking, body hair treatment sessions are approximately 6-8 weeks apart and require an average of 6-10 sessions in total, and facial hair treatments require approximately 6-10 treatment sessions, roughly 4-6 weeks apart.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

In short, no. This is a misconception about laser. It will significantly reduce the amount of hair you have (up to 95%) and make a huge difference to the time needed to maintain the hair at home. Shaving will become extremely minimal, and any hair that is left after a successful course of sessions will be so fine, it will be difficult to find them!
Top Ups
You may be required to have top ups occasionally if you see some regrowth. We have had some clients who have a “zap” every 6 months or so, to get on top of any new growth, and other clients who have never needed to return; every client is different.
Hormonal changes
Times where you may need more ongoing treatments would be if you had hormonal hair growth, or if you had any significant hormonal or health changes, such as pregnancy.

Can I get laser hair removal when pregnant?

No. We would need to stop treatment should you become pregnant during your course and wait until after the baby is born and you have stopped breast-feeding before re-commencing. Pregnancy can sometimes result in some hair regrowth.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Honestly? It’s not the most relaxing treatment that we do! But it is usually fairly tolerable. Typically, it sits at about a 5 or 6 out of 10 on your pain threshold. It feels like tiny elastic bands flicking on the skin. Because we use a quick laser, sessions are fairly short, and we also use cold air simultaneously with the laser, so any discomfort is kept to a minimum.

Can I have laser hair removal if I have a tan?

If you have an active tan from either a sun holiday, sun bed, or even fake tan we cannot treat you due to the increased risk of burning or pigmentation to the skin. We would have to wait until the tan is faded before we treat, which is why the best time of year to treat is in the Autumn and Winter.
Having said that, we treat naturally darker skin types safely and effectively using the Nd:YAG capability on our laser machine.
